Parents in Partnership

We know that as a parent, you know your child best.
Therefore, we value being able to work in partnership with you so that we can share the information that will help in your child’s development. Through sharing ideas about your child’s current interests and needs, everyone can work together to support them in their learning journey.

Get involved

We encourage parents to become involved in the pre-school in any way they feel able. This could include coming in to read a story, talking to the children about a hobby or interest or playing a musical instrument. Please speak to a member of staff if you would like to become involved in this way.

Staying

Because we want all children to feel happy and secure at Sticky Fish, we encourage you to stay with your child for as long as you feel necessary when they first start pre-school. The length of time you stay will depend on your individual child but we feel that children benefit when they begin to engage in new activities and become familiar with this new environment alongside a parent.

Early Years Foundation Stage

(EYFS)

We believe that children learn best when they are provided with stimulating, open-ended play opportunities and are supported through warm and caring relationships. When your child begins at Sticky Fish, they will be given a key worker who will be responsible for helping them settle into the pre-school. Our key worker system promotes positive relationships, helping practitioners gain valuable knowledge and understanding of the needs and interests of each unique child, which enables them to plan appropriate opportunities for their learning and development. We use the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which is the statutory framework for all early years settings in England.

The EYFS outlines seven areas of learning and development. These are:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Literacy
  • Maths
  • Expressive Arts and Design
  • Understanding the World

The EYFS also sets out some of the key Characteristics of Effective Learning. It is becoming widely recognised that how children learn is as important as what they learn. Focusing on the ways children learn about their world helps us to support them to develop important learning dispositions needed for their lifelong learning.

Outdoor play

We believe children need to experience the natural environment every day

We want them to have opportunity to
immerse themselves in energetic, physical play, to pursue their own priorities and interests through real
life outdoor experiences and to be surrounded by nature.
This brings huge benefits to a child’s mental health and wellbeing, as well as the clear links to a child’s all
round development.
The children will begin to learn about their environment, it’s biodiversity, ecology and sustainability, and to take responsibility for this.
You will find us all outside in the garden or our smaller Wild Garden area every day, where the children,
along with our staff, can talk, play, explore and imagine together. It is a place where they can experience connections and know the joy and wonder of nature.
